Geometric scaling for the total γ∗p cross section in the low x region
نویسندگان
چکیده
We observe that the saturation model of deep inelastic scattering, which successfully describes inclusive and diffractive data at small x, predicts a geometric scaling of the total γ∗p cross section in the region of small Bjorken variable x. The geometric scaling in this case means that the cross section is a function of only one dimensionless variable τ = Q2R2 0(x), where the function R0(x) (called saturation radius) decreases with decreasing x. We show that the experimental data from HERA in the region x < 0.01 confirm the expectations of this scaling over a very broad region of Q2. We suggest that the geometric scaling is more general than the saturation model. e-mail: [email protected] e-mail: [email protected] e-mail: [email protected]

We perform a detailed analysis on the validity of geometric scaling in the total γ∗p cross section, σγ∗p. We propose to separate the small and large x behavior writing σγ∗p as a product of two functionsW and S representing, respectively, the dynamical degrees of freedom dominant at small x and a contribution only important at large x. Defining a reduced cross section σ̃γ∗p ≡ σγ∗p/S, we observe g...

The scaling in σ γ * p cross sections (for Q 2 /W 2 << 1) in terms of the scaling variable η = (Q 2 + m 2 0)/Λ 2 (W 2) is interpreted in the generalized vector dominance/color-dipole picture (GVD/CDP). The quantity Λ 2 (W 2) is identified as the average gluon transverse momentum absorbed by the q ¯ q state, < l 2 >= (1/6)Λ 2 (W 2). At any Q 2 , for W 2 → ∞, the cross sections for virtual and re...

We perform a detailed analysis on the scaling properties of the total γ∗p cross section, σγ∗p. We write the cross section as a product of two functions W and V representing, respectively, the dynamical degrees of freedom and the contribution from the valence partons. Analyzing data from HERA and fixed target experiments we find that V is nearly independent of Q and concentrated at large x, whil...

Geometric scaling is a novel scaling phenomenon observed in deep inelastic scattering at small x: the total γ * p cross section depends upon the two kinematical variables Q 2 and x only via their combination ξ ≡ Q 2 R 2 0 (x), with R 2 0 (x) ∝ x λ. At sufficiently low Q 2 , below the saturation scale Q 2 s (x) (∼ a few GeV 2), this phenomenon finds a natural explanation as a property of the Col...
